YUTARO TERADA

I’m from Osaka. Meeting many fascinating people drew me into the culinary world, and I worked at a restaurant in Osaka. When I happened to visit Setoda, I was captivated by the warmth of the people and the atmosphere, so I moved here. I’m striving every day in this uniquely “glocal” place.

YUKI TAKIZAWA

I was born in Yokohama. After majoring in acoustics, I worked in concert halls and film-related facilities, then moved to Canada on my own. While working in vintage clothing, I became fascinated by coffee through a barista job and built experience at roastery cafés both in Canada and after returning to Japan. Although I’d never lived outside Kanto, I decided to move to Ikuchijima—a place I’d never even visited before. “Tasting” is my joy in life, and my motto is: everything is about timing.

Aki Kagota

I’m from Tokyo. I studied architecture at junior college but chose a freer path in my 20s, working in Canada, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Zushi. In my 30s I worked in event floral design. Realizing I didn’t want to stay in Tokyo forever, I looked for a new place to live and, through a friend, joined SOIL Setoda. Going forward, I want to help create a welcoming environment for visitors and new residents in Setoda and support the town-building initiatives at Shiomachi Kikaku.

Yu Nagano

Growing up between the countryside and the city, putting down new roots has always felt natural—even without a single hometown. I first set my sights on advertising, discovered Staple at university, and chose to move into hotel operations, PR, and planning. I want a single hotel stay to be a gateway to belonging in a new local community. I love nature as much as a good drink with good company.

Hiroko Takeuchi

I once dreamed of big-city life, studied hard, then realized, “Tokyo? Maybe I don’t need to go that far,” and enrolled at an education university in Aichi. After graduation I spent 12 years in real estate sales and earned my real estate license. Life then took a turn—I found myself in Melbourne, Australia, where I studied English over coffee and enjoyed a new sense of freedom. Back in Japan, I honed my barista skills in Niseko and deepened my hospitality experience in Kyoto, eventually finding my way to beautiful Setoda. My life map is a bit unconventional, but I’m using those experiences to shape a life that feels truly my own.

Kazuya Ikeda

I’m from Ibaraki. Not quite fitting into the local car culture, I moved to Tokyo after winning a band contest. I loved the Chofu and Komae area, but at 27 I moved to my dream city, London. Two years later I found a job in Germany, struggled to find housing, and eventually landed in Onomichi/Ikuchijima. Now I’m happily working at SOIL Setoda.
In the future, I hope to run a barista/coffee business in the west of the UK, Oslo, or Copenhagen—and get involved in projects across Setoda, Okayama, and Tokyo.

Rina Hirata

I was born in Kyoto and grew up in Shiga. I spent most of my 20s doing PA (sound) work at live music venues in Osaka, and later worked across food service, nail salons, and other customer-facing roles. Having grown up near Lake Biwa, I always wanted to work by the water, so I moved in April 2024 to Setoda, my mother’s hometown. Someday I’d love to open a small café in nature where locals and longtime friends can gather to enjoy music.
